The Sounds of Terror
Our ears reveal what our eyes don’t perceive. With a sound we can tell if danger is near or far, if what lurks the path is large. Even deafening silence gives us signals to hide or run for our lives—these are the sounds of terror.
Sounds have the capacity to pursue, surprise, and terrorize, even when we can’t see what the darkness hides.
These sounds can be lethal weapons
Sounds can trigger palpable, overwhelming, disturbing, and distressing sensations. Unlike images, which we can make disappear just by closing our eyes, we cannot escape sound, making us vulnerable to it in ways we can’t imagine.
Used since wartime, sound has been a weapon of terror, torture, fear, and control—to show power before the enemy.
