Tron – Ares

What happens when a computer program crosses the border between the digital and real world? Is it simply executable code, or can it develop its own consciousness that challenges its original programming? Joachim Rønning brings us these unsettling questions in ‘Tron: Ares’, the long-awaited continuation arriving 15 years after ‘Tron: Legacy’.

Jared Leto embodies Ares, an extremely advanced digital soldier sent to the physical world on a desperate mission. He has only 29 minutes to complete his objective before vanishing, unless he obtains the permanence code that would allow him to exist indefinitely among humans.

The film constructs a fascinating moral dilemma between two visions of artificial intelligence: Julian Dillinger, portrayed by Evan Peters, seeks absolute control through technology, while Eve Kim, masterfully interpreted by Greta Lee, aspires to use it to drive human progress without losing our essence.

On a visual level, ‘Tron: Ares’ is a feast for the senses. The retrofuturist aesthetic combined with dazzling light effects and impeccably executed action choreography creates a unique atmosphere that keeps you glued to your seat. Although the script occasionally falls into cheesy conversations and the attempt to humanize Tron doesn’t always work, the film manages to update the original saga’s themes to resonate with contemporary dilemmas about artificial intelligence and technological power.

It’s a cinematic experience riddled with nods for fans of previous installments, yet independent enough to stand on its own. ‘Tron: Ares’ is a release you can’t miss if you’re fascinated by exploring where code ends and consciousness begins.
